What is Robust Quality Engineering(RQE)?
MT System (Maharanobis Taguchi System):
The MT Method is a methodology within the MT system, designed to optimize diagnostic and pattern recognition systems, developed by Dr. Genichi Taguchi and based on the Mahalanobis Distance created by the renowned statistician Dr. P. C. Mahalanobis.
Basic Concept of MT System:
1.Definition of Normal Events/Samples: Normal events and samples share similar characteristics, resulting in highly uniform patterns. In contrast, abnormal events and samples deviate from normal behavior, making it impossible to establish predefined patterns.
2.Mahalanobis Distance Calculation: The MT system calculates the Mahalanobis Distance (MD) for each event or sample, which measures its distance from the normal group. A larger MD indicates that an event or sample is more abnormal. MD is used to determine whether an event or sample belongs to the normal group. An effective system should clearly differentiate between abnormal and normal cases, resulting in few or no false positives and false negatives.
Application examples:
・Evaluation of treatment effectiveness for liver disease.
・Fire detection system based on outputs from multiple smoke and temperature sensors.
・Inspection of product appearance quality using data from painting process.
・Inspection of product appearance using image data.
・Prediction and prevention of equipment and system failures, including large turbine systems.
・Prediction of manufacturing yield based on material and process data.
・Handwritten character recognition.
・Voice recognition and speech-to-text conversion.
・Personal authentication using fingerprint data.
・Prediction of future real estate prices.
・Prediction of a company’s future profit margins.
・Hiring decisions making based on personnel data.
Types of MT System:
Besides MT Method, the MT System offers two other methodologies, T method and RT method. Appropriate method must be identified according to the objective of project. Table below shows the classification of these methodologies.
| Classification | Examples | Commonly used method | ||
| MT method | T method | RT method | ||
| Examination and Diagnosis | Characteristic testing, visual,inspection, medical diagnosis | ✓ | ✓ | |
| Monitoring | Monitoring of equipment, facilities andplants, safety monitoring | ✓ | ✓ | |
| Estimation | Real estate valuation, corporate valuation, biotechnology | ✓ | ✓ | |
| Prediction | Helth and medical condition trends, economic indicatior trends, sales trends, risk forecasts | ✓ | ✓ | |
